We are seeking a highly experienced and talented Principal Engineer to join our dynamic engineering team. This individual will be one of the most senior individual contributors at Coinbase and will play a crucial role in influencing technical decisions across multiple critical areas including identity management, payment processing, ledgering systems, risk assessment, and artificial intelligence implementations.
This person will mentor other individual contributors (ICs) to promote technical excellence and professional growth within the organization. The role requires someone who can balance hands-on technical work with strategic thinking and leadership responsibilities. You'll be working on systems that handle millions of transactions and serve millions of users worldwide.

While many roles at Coinbase are remote-first, we are not remote-only. In-person participation is required throughout the year for team collaboration and company-wide initiatives. Team and company-wide offsites are held multiple times annually to foster collaboration, connection, and alignment. Attendance is expected and fully supported by the company.
Key Responsibilities
- Technical Leadership & Architecture: Influence and oversee large-scale engineering efforts across various critical domains such as identity management systems, payment processing infrastructure, distributed ledgering technologies, risk assessment frameworks, and AI/ML implementations
- Strategic Vision & Planning: Collaborate with product leaders, engineering managers, and cross-functional teams to establish and execute comprehensive vision and architecture strategies for platform services
- Platform Development & API Design: Help drive the unified vision for product platform services and API surface design, ensuring scalability, reliability, and developer experience across all touchpoints
- Data Systems & Infrastructure: Lead the development and scaling of distributed data stores and ledger systems within payment frameworks, handling high-volume transactions with strict consistency requirements
- Engineering Excellence: Implement and enforce best practices for building and maintaining large-scale distributed systems, including monitoring, testing, deployment, and incident response procedures
- Mentorship & Knowledge Sharing: Provide technical guidance and mentorship to junior and senior engineers, conduct code reviews, and share knowledge through documentation and internal presentations
Qualifications & Requirements
- Experience: Minimum of 15+ years of professional software engineering experience with demonstrated expertise in backend systems and platform development
- Leadership Experience: Proven experience providing technical and strategic oversight for high-performing global teams of hundreds of engineers across multiple time zones and cultural contexts
- Influence & Communication: Demonstrated desire and ability to inspire, influence, and drive technical and organisational change at all levels, including cross-functional teams, VPs, and C-Suite executives
- Scale & Impact: Demonstrated experience working with large-scale distributed systems and solving complex technical problems with multi-year, multi-billion-dollar, and multi-organisational impact
- Collaboration Skills: Excellent collaboration and communication skills with the proven ability to work effectively with cross-functional leaders and mentor team members at all levels
- Industry Knowledge: Significant experience in the fintech sector, with cryptocurrency and blockchain experience being a strong plus. Understanding of financial regulations and compliance requirements preferred
- Technical Depth: Deep expertise in modern programming languages, distributed systems architecture, database technologies, and cloud computing platforms
